Seasonal Illnesses: What You Need to Know
As the seasons change, so do the germs we face. With RSV, colds, flu, and COVID-19 on the rise, it’s important to know the symptoms, when to call the doctor, and how to keep your family safe.
Seasonal Illnesses:
RSV: A respiratory virus that can cause mild cold-like symptoms, but may become serious in infants and children with complex medical needs.
Cold: Usually mild and caused by several different viruses.
Flu: Caused by the influenza virus and often more severe than a cold.
COVID-19: Caused by the coronavirus, symptoms range from mild to serious, especially in those with underlying health conditions.
Common Symptoms:
RSV: Runny nose, cough, sneezing, decreased appetite, wheezing, or trouble breathing.
Cold: Stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, mild cough.
Flu: Sudden fever, body aches, fatigue, cough, sore throat, chills.
COVID-19: Fever, cough, congestion, sore throat, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, and breathing difficulties.
When to Call the Doctor:
• Trouble breathing, rapid breathing, or wheezing
• High fever that does not improve
• Signs of dehydration (fewer wet diapers, dry mouth, no tears)
• Blue lips or face
• Persistent vomiting or inability to eat/drink
• Worsening or concerning symptoms
Prevention Tips:
• Wash hands often and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
• Stay at home to reduce the spread of illness
• Stay up to date on recommended vaccines, including flu and COVID-19
• Encourage healthy habits like covering coughs and sneezes
